About the Item
This French late 19th century tapestry is typical of the period giving a romantic and light feel that will fit into so many different areas. Tapestries from this period are much small than the large 17th and 18th century pieces as the rooms and homes are smaller compared to the castles and stately homes that earlier tapestries were made for. This lovely piece has at the center two women sitting in front of a water fountain talking and relaxing, this scene is encompassed by a soft and floral setting surrounded by a border set on a burgundy ground. Measures: 3'4 x 4'6.

Tapestry is a form of textile art, traditionally woven by hand on a loom. Tapestry is weft-faced weaving, in which all the warp threads are hidden in the completed work, unlike cloth weaving where both the warp and the weft threads may be visible. In tapestry weaving, weft yarns are typically discontinuous; the artisan interlaces each colored weft back and forth in its own small pattern area. It is a plain weft-faced weave having weft threads of different colors worked over portions of the warp to form the design.
Most weavers use a natural warp thread, such as wool, linen or cotton. The weft threads are usually wool or cotton but may include silk, gold, silver, or other alternatives.
