About the Item

This antique French Aubusson rug features a moss-green field with a sandy-yellow central medallion, a central floral motif surrounded by a raspberry-red petal band and a tobacco-brown lobed band issuing a delicate tulip motif all enclosed by a circle of polychrome flowerheads, at each end a large flowering vase issuing to the left and right a scrolling acanthus leaf vine terminating with a large flowerhead, with similar smaller acanthus leaf and flowerhead panels at each side, in a moss-green border with brick-red acanthus leaf vine linking rosettes between plain sandy-yellow stripes, outer moss-green stripe. French Aubusson rugs are elegant, handwoven tapestries that originated in the town of Aubusson, France, during the 17th century. Known for their delicate floral patterns, pastel colors, and intricate scrollwork, these rugs were originally made for French aristocracy. They often feature central medallions, ornate borders, and a soft, flat-woven texture. Aubusson rugs embody classic European sophistication and remain highly valued for their artistry and historical significance.
