About the Item
The antique Aubusson carpets dating from the Napoleon III period are distinguished by patterns which are inspired by the ceiling decorations of seventeenth and eighteenth century French palaces. The antique Aubusson carpets from the periods following the Bourbon Restoration distinguish themselves by a more delicate palette and by the employment of architectural motifs often inspired by the ceiling decorations of the palaces from the Louis XIV-Louis XVI period. This sumptuous oversized example displays a large ivory oval central reserve containing a floral bouquet, set against a soft rose red background, and surrounded by floral garlands which are connected to architectural volutes framing the wide border.
The condition of this example is remarkably good, as it has preserved essentially all of its original tapestry woven surface. The carpet has a cotton backing in order to provide a more solid structure. Its pristine condition allows it to be used in any decorative setting.

Many weavers who settled in France were Huguenots who had fled Spain during the Inquisition in the early sixteenth century. By issuing the edict of Nantes, Henry IV granted all non-Catholics freedom of worship, thereby protecting the carpet weavers in Aubusson. Aubusson weavers became the finest craftsmen in the world.
