About the Item
Hand-knotted in Finnish wool pile and originating circa 1910–1920, this 9x12 rustic Antique Scandinavian Rya Rug from Rug
Kilim’s Scandinavian Collection is a beautiful early example of the folk art traditions that gave rise to the mid-century modern aesthetic.
On the Design:
This Rya rug is a rare, textural poem of the Northern harvest, distinguished by its authentic folk charm and historical importance. Its unique design served as a foundational model, proving to be an inspiration for further Rya rugs to come in the decades that followed.
The entire field is defined by a rigorous, visually satisfying grid of circular medallions set against a raw, textured ground of natural, undyed fibers. This design is a spectacular find for its pictorial representation: the inclusion of elegant vine leaves and detailed figural clusters of grapes—a motif seldom seen in pieces of this era outside of hooked rugs.
The dense geometric pattern is given luxurious dimension by the long, high wool pile that is characteristic of the Rya weaving tradition, lending the surface an inviting, soft depth. This strong, structured geometry and authentic character sets it apart from the more industrialized styles that followed, underscoring its heritage and deep rustic beauty.
Condition:
This rug is in overall good structural condition for its age, retaining its authentic texture and color. It is currently undergoing expert restoration and conservation by our in-house master weaver and will be available upon completion of this process.
