About the Item
This 4x7 antique Scottish textile runner is from an exceptional new curation in Rug
Kilim’s Tapestry
Textile Collection—an intriguing find among fragments with a rich pictorial based in European folk art, made with all wool and believed to originate from Scotland circa 1890-1900.
On the Design:
A ground of ochre and mustard gold tones underscores the equally rich and vibrant medley of designs in this piece’s all over pattern—a marriage of polychromatic florals with a fabulous whimsy around a particularly arresting series of figurals, ranging from horseback riders to birds, townsfolk, and possible allusions to mythical creatures. Admirers of the craft will note what a particularly unexpected design this is for its provenance, with much of the soul and sensibility one might see in more Swedish-inspired folk art than Scottish tapestries of this period, though its subtle variety of colors and charming depictions of life are an especially unique find in any provenance. It’s additionally quite unexpected to see this particular marriage of bucolic scenery and so many mythic creatures—a unique play of the scenes of daily life in a rural town and such large-scale, grandiose creatures like these possible references to dragons and peacocks that further speaks to an intimate and truly one-of-a-kind piece of its provenance.
Keen eyes will further note the interesting double-weft style at play in this weave, with a particularly defined texture and backing that may connote a Jacquard loom, as does its outstanding quality and condition for a work of its era. In any case, it remains an exemplary find of fascinating provenance and equally astounding beauty, speaking to one of the most personal and warm, welcoming new additions among our collection.
Condition:
This antique Scottish textile further enjoys good condition for its age and origin, with only minor wear consistent with age—intended for wall-hanging purposes only. Those interested in possible use on the floor may inquire for a consultation.
