Handwoven in wool circa 1880-1890, this 1x1 antique Swedish tapestry flatweave is a rich treasure from the Scandinavian Rollakan and Flamskvav weaving traditions.
On the Design:
A warm, saturated red underscores rich brown, black and gold tones in its play of geometric patterns and pictorials of human figures in the central field—a rich piece of folk art capturing the daily lives of weavers that would play a huge role in the Scandinavian renaissance soon to come. Admirers of the craft will appreciate the influence of Persian and Turkish design elements in the geometry at work; motifs that would later take on a more minimalist form in the early Scandinavian movement. It is an extremely collectible piece of design history as much as a handmade work of art, teeming with rustic, old-world charm and rich beauty of Swedish folk art.
