Handmade in wool and originating from Germany circa 1910-1920, this 4x6 antique hooked rug is an exceptional find of the celebrated Tetex lineage—a well-regarded European loom known in particular for such unusual, gorgeous finds in the history of this technique since the early 20th century; only a limited number remaining today.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will enjoy this rug’s marriage of a Oriental pattern of European sensibility—another collectible trait of Tetex carpets, known for their diverse, eclectic works, exemplified in this particular rug’s employ of a Turkish design through the lens of so many German design sensibilities. A warm, rich red underscores the central field, which hosts a range of primitivist tribal motifs and geometric-floral patterns in ice, navy blue, and light gold tones. The same hues underscore the widest of the borders surrounded, where the light gold is the more present tone beneath the meander of more large-scale patterns in a vine-scroll fashion. The unusual choice of colors, as well as the particular arrangement of them, give this piece a more fabulous sense of movement for such a rustic, old-world pattern.
