About the Item

This carpet, designed by Pierre Balmain in the 1970s in France, is a rare example of the "Kyoto" pattern and was produced in Belgium by the Van Neder company. Worked in wool, it has a design that is a fusion of geometric and floral elements. The design is a symmetrical composition with architectural and floral interlacing, stylized in a palette of blue, ochre, and brown, recalling oriental and art deco influences. The outer border features a diagonal crisscross pattern, also in shades of blue, framed by a simple brown line that completes the rug. The "Kyoto" design reflects the elegance and sophistication typical of the Balmain style, combining Asian references with a modern European graphic sensibility. SIgned on the back PIERRE BALMAIN (1914-1982) founded his now iconic Label in 1945. Alongside the titans of haute couture Christian Dior and Hubert de Givenchy. The son of a dressmaker and a drapery salesman, Balmain's founder was born in 1914 in southeastern France and formed an interest in fashion at an early age. His mother wanted her son to become an architect, but the principles of design and structure that Pierre learned during his brief studies at the École des Beaux Arts served him throughout his career
