About the Item
This 5x9 vintage French Art Deco tapestry is an extremely collectible, one-of-a-kind curation from the personal collection of Ivan da Silva Bruhns; handwoven circa 1936 by da Silva Bruhns in the Manufacture de Savigny and recently discovered among his most exclusive, personal works of textile art saved from his estate. Made with a unique blend of plant fibers and exotic yarns, both collectors and admirers of the craft will note this was acquired through the Tanouärn family’s execution of Da Silva Bruhns’ will and estate, and represents one of the only pieces from the artist’s iconic works, particularly rugs and textiles, left among his formerly closed archives—both a treasure in the history of European art and an exemplary work by this legendary weaver.
On the Design:
The work is entitled "Deux oiseaux affrontés et entourés par des motifs géométriques traités dans le goût précolombien" (translated: “Two confronting birds surrounded by geometric motifs treated in Pre-Columbian taste”). Among its many accolades, it speaks to Da Silva Bruhns' more minimalist works, and especially his works marrying Pre-Columbian iconography with his own signature sensibility that yielded some of the most interesting foundations of what we call French Art Deco today, praised even in its early days by contemporaries such as the writer René Chavance. Such sharp lines, clean curves and smart use of negative space and minimal hues speak volumes to the influence of Da Silva Bruhns’ work as these elements would only evolve—as students of his works will know—into even more vibrant, expansive palettes and dynamic designs yet to be revealed. To wit, one might see this piece as a foundation for some of the great works of the period to come, especially considering its presence in the artist’s personal archives and the great strides Da Bruhns’ loom-mounted works would inspire in the years to come.
Keen eyes for detail will further admire a gentle, natural sheen in the plant fibers used in this weave, slightly more visible in the cream and beige tones than the richer brown hues of the geometric patterns—an element that lends both a subtle accent to the overall presence and drama of the design through its play of the light in any space.
