This exquisite oversized Savonnerie rug from 1920s France is a masterful display of classical French design interpreted through a lush, decorative lens. Woven in the historic Savonnerie tradition—originally established under Louis XIII for royal commissions—this rug showcases the refined artistry and opulence associated with 18th- and 19th-century French decorative arts.
At the heart of the composition lies an elaborate roundel medallion, radiating layers of petal-like motifs in rich shades of lavender, aubergine, blush, and cream. This central rosette blooms against a pale ivory ground encircled by a garland border, acting as a luminous focal point that commands attention without overwhelming the space.
Surrounding the central medallion is a vast olive-green field, richly embellished with scrolling acanthus leaves, laurel branches, and neoclassical floral sprays in subdued hues of celadon, rose, amethyst, and taupe.
