Antique Turkish Ghurdes Prayer Rug, Circa 1880s
This is a beautiful antique Turkish Ghurdes prayer rug, hand-knotted from soft wool in the 1880s. This piece is a wonderful example of classic Anatolian weaving and a testament to its history. The rug features a traditional mihrab, or prayer niche, design in the central field, which is rendered in a soft palette of ivory and beige. The arch is bordered by intricate floral and geometric patterns in subtle tones of blue, brown, and pale rose.
The main border and guard borders feature repeating stylized floral and star motifs that beautifully complement the central design.
