About the Item

This exceptional antique Turkmen Hachli rug, dating back to the 1870s, is a museum-quality piece of textile art, rich with the history of Central Asian nomadic tribes. Traditionally used as tent entrance covers or dowry storage bags, the Hachli (or Hatchli) design is one of the most recognizable and sacred motifs in Turkmen weaving, symbolized by the distinct cross-form (from the Persian hach, meaning 'cross'). The entire field is a glorious canvas of deep, luminous madder red and warm chocolate-browns, achieved using natural, organic vegetable dyes. The intricate patterning features multiple borders and an inner field divided by bold vertical and horizontal geometric lines, forming four distinctive quarters filled with geometric motifs. Woven entirely from high-quality, hand-spun wool, the rug has a soft, dense pile and retains excellent saturation and structural integrity for its age, showcasing minimal signs of wear consistent with a treasured antique of nearly 150 years. This piece works perfectly as a small statement rug, a wall hanging, or layered in a high-end design interior.
