This antique, circa 1850, French Aubusson rug has a fox-brown field with a sandy-brown interlocking hexagonal pattern enclosing a four petal flower, a floral bouquet in each corner, the central roundel with floral and leafy bands around a sea-blue roundel containing a bold cusped fox-brown, raspberry-red and dusty pink rosette, in a sea-blue border of fox-brown rectangular panels each with a floral spray linked by key-pattern panels between a fox-brown inner meandering floral and an outer curved pattern frame, plain outer sandy-brown and fox-brown stripes. French Aubusson rugs are elegant, handwoven tapestries that originated in the town of Aubusson, France, during the 17th century. Known for their delicate floral patterns, pastel colors, and intricate scrollwork, these rugs were originally made for French aristocracy. They often feature central medallions, ornate borders, and a soft, flat-woven texture. Aubusson rugs embody classic European sophistication and remain highly valued for their artistry and historical significance.
