About the Item

This antique, circa 1900, French Aubusson rug has a fox-brown field with diagonal rows of soft terracotta-brown four petal flowerheads, an outer band of linked laurel leaves linking a polychrome floral bouquet in each corner, the golden-yellow roundel in the centre surrounded by bands of leafy-floral and polychrome flowerheads around a cusped rosette, in a broad fox-brown border of terracotta-red acanthus leaf and flowerhead vine between soft-terracotta-brown and sandy-yellow plain stripes. French Aubusson rugs are elegant, handwoven tapestries that originated in the town of Aubusson, France, during the 17th century. Known for their delicate floral patterns, pastel colors, and intricate scrollwork, these rugs were originally made for French aristocracy. They often feature central medallions, ornate borders, and a soft, flat-woven texture. Aubusson rugs embody classic European sophistication and remain highly valued for their artistry and historical significance.
