About the Item
Jacques Borker (France, b. 1922)
Rectangular Carpet, c. 1970
Wool, with geometric decoration in black, grey, and cream on a vivid orange ground.
Signed on the reverse. Made in France.
This striking wool carpet exemplifies Jacques Borker’s mastery of modernist textile design, characterized by bold geometric abstraction and refined color harmonies. The composition juxtaposes strong vertical black forms against blocks of muted grey and cream, dynamically balanced within a saturated orange field. Designed circa 1970, the piece reflects Borker’s synthesis of art and function, bridging postwar modernism and decorative arts. Borker, a leading figure in French textile design, is celebrated for his architectural approach to form and rhythm, which lends his carpets a sculptural, almost musical quality.

Swedish Rya Rug in Geometric Pattern of Red Orange and Black
By Dania Taepper
Located in Ferndale, MI
Deep dense 100% wool shag pile square rya rug produced in Denmark circa 1965 by Dania Taepper in a geometric collage of contrasting reds and black. Measures: 90" x 90".
Rya or rye is a traditional Scandinavian wool rug with a long pile of about 1 to 3 inches. Made using a form of the Ghiordes knot to make the double-sided pile fabric. Though rya means "rug" in English, the original meaning in Sweden of rya was a bed cover with a knotted pile. The first ryas originated in the early fifteenth century as coarse, long-piled, heavy covers used by mariners instead of furs. As time went on the rugs became more bright and colorful. Now very much a part of mid century interior design.
