About the Item

This striking elegant carpet is from a Limited Edition of 36 units (ours is Edition # 5 of 36, hand signed by the artist/designer George J Sowden, one of the original MEMPHIS members from 1981. It is entirely handmade; every aspect of this piece was made by hand by superb artisans in Nepal, using Tibetan traditions and the very finest wool. The result is an exquisite rug that features vivid geometric decorative patterns and colors. Handmade in the Uma technique. Life's Commodities 2003 Collection. George Sowden, born in the UK, moved to Milan in 1970, became a founding member of the Memphis collective in 1981, where he is known for his constructivist geometric and unconventional style. In 2010, he launched his namesake brand, SOWDEN. Over the years, he has collaborated with international companies like Hay, Philips Electronics, Alessi, Body, Swatch and many artisanal producers, cultivating a passion for patterns and decoration that began in the 1970s and continues to shape his work — balancing industrial design with visual experimentation.
