About the Item
Mid-Century Modern handwoven kelim rug with red and black geometric ornament. The simple geometric decoration of this rug, manufactured in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s, is stylistically influenced by the modern vision of Marie Hoppe-Teinitzerová (1879-1960) and the Czechoslovak Werkbund, Slávka Vondrácková.
Teinitzerová considered simple patterns derived from the modest folk ornaments to be appropriate for the typical functionalist flat of the 20s. Vondrácková pushed for the absolute simplicity of the objects in the home interiors and cited Le Corbusier's predilection for the Berber rugs as an example of folk patterns used in the modernist realm.
