About the Item

This rug is part of a rare group of central Asian weavings which were commissioned by the local patronage, at the height of the fashion for European Modernism. Here the pattern bypasses any connections with the past, embracing a design module that adheres completely to the dictates of Modernism. This spectacular abstract geometric composition illustrates the degree with which certain workshops were able to veer from tradition to radical innovation. Signed in the lower right hand corner with an unidentified monogram. This rug is part of our current online exhibition entitled 'Art Deco 1925-2025 A Century of Progressive Design'.
