Hand-knotted in wool circa 1790-1800, this oversized 15x26 antique axminster rug is an extremely rare collectible English palace rug—an exciting new classic curation in Rug
Kilim’s European rug collection.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft may note an inspiration from antique Persian rugs, particularly those of Isfahan rug sensibilities, in the all over floral patterns of the field and border alike. Camel tones of beige-brown underscore the series of palmettes, herati (or “fish” patterns), and other elegant, regal illustrations, and keen eyes will further admire an emphasis of orange, green, and light blue tones among the many accent hues at play. The sheer variety of colors and attention to scale alone are a considerable feat for works of this size, let alone in late 18th- to early 19th-century weaving. It’s an exceptional find in oversized rugs of such a grand quality and elegant sensibility, and furthermore among European rugs of Oriental influence—known to yield some of the most interesting and sought-after pieces among connoisseurs in our field.
