Made with hand-knotted wool and originating from East Turkestan circa 1930-50, this 6x7 Samarkand rug is an exciting entry to Rug
Kilim’s repertoire of Vintage Oriental creations.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will recognize this Samarkand among those of a particular Chinese influence to its design, especially in the notably charming pictorial design in its field. It hosts three vases in different hues, all brimming with flowers. The thick outer border is densely populated with floral motifs as well. All these qualities culminate to reflect the sensibility that makes such Samarkands of this style so sought-after today. Notable aspects further include the deliberate flattening of perspective and the use of compartmentalized color blocks to define individual objects. The design employs a palette dominated by vibrant red, with accents of beige, orange, pink, and purple hues. Keen eyes for detail shall admire the cultural syncretism characteristic of Samarkand production, blending Islamic Central Asian weaving traditions with Chinese decorative motifs and iconography.
