On the Design:
A distinguished example of 19th-century French artistry, this exquisite Savonnerie rug exemplifies the neoclassical inspiration with tasteful elegance. A graceful circular medallion filled with floral rosettes, encircled by concentric ornamental bands is set against a tan field. Radiating from the medallion, finely drawn flowering vines unfold with delicate precision, their curling tendrils and botanical flourishes rendered in harmonious tones of blush pink and sage green.
Of particular note are the four stylized squirrel motifs, artfully woven in warm brown tones and positioned symmetrically around the central medallion. These charming figures, nestled amid the foliage, lend a sense of whimsical vitality and narrative character to the composition—an unusual and captivating feature within the Savonnerie tradition. The borders of the carpet are equally elaborate, framed with classical motifs and end panels that depict serene swans amid tufts of grass, alongside decorative medallions and scrolling accents.
