This 1x1 antique Swedish tapestry is a rare and iconic remnant of the works of Scandinavian design matriarch Barbo Nilsson—a signed collectible and exceptional new addition to Rug
Kilim’s curation of Nordic treasures, made with a handwoven wool flatweave and originating from Sweden circa 1920-1930.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will know Barbro Nilsson both as a trailblazer of the Swedish minimalist and modern movements as well as one of the lead designers under Scandinavian design phenom Märta Måås-Fjetterström—a renowned team since their works in Bastaad beginning in 1919, which makes this textile all-the-more special being one of the earliest works of their renaissance. This piece enjoys geometric patterns in warm tones of red, pink, beige and cream that evoke a gorgeous shabby-chic retro vibe. The design is vivid and complex for works of this technique, though still exemplary of Swedish rugs in their impressionistic, country-chic beauty—from a tradition among the earliest works of retro, rustic Scandinavian rugs and textiles in our collection. Keen eyes will note the weaver’s initials “BN” toward the upper border of the piece.

This vintage Swedish textile further enjoys good condition for its age and origin, intended for wall-hanging purposes as a decorative tapestry only.
