About the Item

Made with hand-knotted wool in France circa 1940-1950, this 9x10 vintage French Art Deco rug is an extremely collectible mid-century circle rug from Leleu Decorateur—the work of an iconic family label known for their impact on an iconic design movement. On the Design: The Leleu atelier, renowned for luxury furnishings and interior design during the 1920s-1930s, created textiles of extraordinary refinement for discerning clientele. The central design features a refined medallion with an intricate floral rosette surrounded by a geometric border on the luminous beige field that creates an elegant foundation for the controlled decorative elements. The strategic placement of corner rosettes and border medallions demonstrates exceptional understanding of classical proportional relationships. The sophisticated color palette reflects Leleu's refined aesthetic sensibility—warm champagne ground providing a luxurious foundation while burgundy, sage green, and cream accents create harmonious relationships characteristic of French decorative tradition. The floral border features stylized vine work and rosettes rendered with the precision that distinguished Leleu workshop production during the Art Deco period. The Leleu signature adds exceptional collector value perfect for sophisticated interiors requiring documented design history and artistic distinction representing the pinnacle of French decorative arts achievement. Condition This signed vintage Leleu rug further enjoys an overall good condition for its age and origin.

Signed Paule Leleu Vintage Art Deco Rug in Gold with Florals - Rug Kilim
Located in Long Island City, NY
This magnificent and genuinely rare collectible 8x10 piece, hand-knotted in plush wool pile by Paule Leleu circa 1942–1946, is an exciting centerpiece for Rug & Kilim's Vintage Art Deco Collection. As chief rug designer for the influential Maison Leleu, Paule is celebrated for transitioning the Art Deco aesthetic toward more fluid, post-war elegance. On the Design: This rug is a woven masterpiece, epitomizing Paule Leleu's refined aesthetic, which seamlessly blends the symmetry of Art Deco with the charm of classical botanical illustration. It is a rare and collectible piece that speaks to a critical period in French design history (the 1940s), when Leleu expanded her repertoire to embrace rich floral patterns. The design features a centralized, open field of luminous saffron and gold, serving as a warm, opulent canvas. This space is framed by a lavish, scrolling border of large, stylized roses, leaves, and smaller blossoms. The motifs are rendered in a bold yet sophisticated palette of deep red, soft rose pink, and rich olive green. The artistry lies in the perfect balance between the opulent border and the uncluttered field—a hallmark of Leleu's genius. Authenticated as an original creation, the rug bears the visible signature of Paule Leleu, confirming its status not merely as a luxurious floor covering but as a prized artifact of French style moderne and a beautiful piece of European design heritage. 20th Century, Brown and Floreal Motifs Savonerie French Rug, ca 1920
Located in Firenze, IT
The term Savonerie identifies a series of carpets knotted with Turkish knot and adorned with floral designs, made in Europe in various manufactories. The most famous and the one that gives the name to these carpets was settled in Paris in an ancient soap factory. Its foundation was an attempt by France in the seventeenth century to reproduce the expensive oriental carpets, but the main feature of these carpets is the Western style decor, which introduced an absolute novelty in the furnishings of the time. The productions of Savonerie over the years have become multiple, the most popular in addition to the French are the Spanish and Austrian. They were manufactories created specifically to produce large carpets intended for sumptuous noble palaces. Since the end of the 19th century many manufactories have also begun to produce carpets of different sizes, always with a decoration dictated by a Western style furniture...
