About the Item

This striking wool rug, woven in the 1980s, presents a bold Surrealist composition by Victor Brauner (Romania, 1903 – France, 1966). Measuring 160 x 202 cm (63 x 79.5 in), the work functions both as a decorative textile and as a tribute to one of the most enigmatic figures of 20th-century Surrealism. Rendered in vibrant tones, the “Hen” motif exemplifies Brauner’s playful yet symbolic visual language, which often merged dream imagery with esoteric references. Brauner was a key member of the Surrealist circle in Paris, where he settled in 1930 and befriended Constantin Brancusi, Yves Tanguy, and Alberto Giacometti. Deeply fascinated by mystical systems and archetypal symbolism, his practice spanned painting, drawing, and printmaking, always marked by an autobiographical undercurrent. His famous Self-portrait with enucleated eye (1931) eerily prefigured the loss of his own eye in 1938, an incident that cemented his reputation as a visionary artist. By the 1980s, Brauner’s works had achieved iconic status, inspiring a range of authorized reproductions in diverse media. This textile, adapted from his imagery, encapsulates the enduring vitality of Surrealism and stands as a unique synthesis of fine art and decorative craft.
