Made with a luxurious hand-knotted wool pile, this 16x21 Vintage European rug (Austrian, circa 1940) is a captivating study in texture and tradition. Heralding from the classical Savonnerie lineage, this textile acts as a majestic bridge between the ornamental grandeur of history and the clear, tonal demands of the modern interior, making this piece an exciting centerpiece for Rug
Kilim's European Collection.
On the Design:
This rug is a beautifully preserved meditation on the Transitional style, where the flourish of classical European design is rendered with a quiet, modern look that makes it profoundly unique. The richer, deeper colors—a palette of dusky rose, muted slate blue, and pale mint green—are woven into the design with sophisticated tonal blending, creating an effect of aged fresco or velvet patina.
The entire field is dominated by a majestic, centralized oval cartouche, which is lovingly framed by scrolling, symmetrical acanthus leaves and floral volutes. This formal, Baroque-inspired structure, characteristic of Savonnerie weaving, seems to emerge dreamily from the warm, distressed taupe ground.
The complexity of the layered ornamentation—which speaks to antique Anatolian textiles that often inspired European workshops—is here reimagined with a painterly softness. The resulting depth and chromatic richness, combined with the plush, hand-knotted pile, transform a traditional motif into a powerful, comforting statement piece, perfect for contemporary elegance.
Condition:
This vintage Savonnerie rug is in excellent foundational condition for a textile of its age, exhibiting soft color mellowing consistent with its history. This beautiful piece is currently undergoing expert restoration and conservation by our in-house master weaver and will be available upon completion of this process.
