About the Item
The Haas weaving company was founded in 1810, and was guided by founder's son Philipp since 1818. Initially they were manufacturers of clothing fabrics, transitioning into upholstery from 1831 and incorporating carpets since 1845. In 1851 he was joined by his two sons, Eduard and Robert, and the company was renamed Philipp Haas
Söhne. Their weaving workshops were located in the Austrian towns of Ebergassing and Mitterndorf. The carpets they produced were based on designs commissioned to the most representative artists of the period. Soon their carpets achieved an international reputation for excellence in quality, especially after they exhibited at the 1873 Vienna World Fair. Soon after they were awarded the prestigious title of Imperial and Royal Court Carpet and Upholstery Fabric Supplier, placing them at the pinnacle of the Austrian textile industry.
Woven in a quintessential Viennese secessionist style, this modernist carpet features a design consisting of a centralised cartouche containing a kaleidoscopic array of flaming moirèe fabric patterns. It illustrates the very essence of the Wiener Werkstätte, with its aim at modernising ancient textile traditions.
