Leather Swan Sofas by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen
Located in Dallas, TX
Easily one of Arne Jacobsen's most recognizable designs is the rare 'Swan' settee model no. 3321, for The Republic of Fritz Hansen. Devised as an extension and produced in far fewer numbers than the famous Swan chair. The settee is a sculptural masterpiece that forgoes boring straight lines in favor of a unique shape composed of smooth curves and soft round edges with outstanding comfort, mounted on the polished aluminium base, an innovative design. Retains the original manufacturers label. Recently professionally reupholstered in leather with a very nice patina. It was an immediate star when it was unveiled at the opening of the Royal SAS Hotel in Copenhagen in 1958. Jacobsen was the principal architect and designer for the cutting-edge hotel. The furniture he created for the project make up some of his most iconic designs. Two available, price is per item. Literature: Arne Jacobsen, Thau and Vindum, pg. 470 An icon of Danish furniture design, Arne Jacobsen was first and foremost an architect, he used that skill to create a catalog of groundbreaking product designs. He embodied the spirit of simple, functional elegance that defined the movement now known as Danish mid-century modernism. Some of his designs include the iconic Series 7 Chair, Ant Chair, Egg Chair, Swan Chair and Settee, Mayor Sofa...

Charlottenborg Lounge Sofa, 2 Seats, by Arne Jacobsen, New Edition
Located in Courbevoie, FR
Charlottenborg lounge sofa. 2 seats, by Arne Jacobsen. New edition. The curved shape, which later became very characteristic for Arne Jacobsen’s many famous chairs, is already suggested in this very early piece of furniture. The Charlottenborg sofa has quite an unconventional shape, where the elegant curved rattan frame integrates the back seamlessly with the armrest at the bottom of the sofa. The frame of rattan is mounted with an upholstered cushion, available in a range of hardwearing fabric types. The elegant design of this 2-seat sofa will beautifully accessorize any living room, hall or vacation home. It is a known fact, that the Charlottenborg chair...

Poul Kjærholm PK24 Lounge Chair for Fritz Hansen in Leather (Cat. 5)
Located in Glendale, CA
Poul Kjærholm 'PK24' Lounge Chair for Fritz Hansen in Aura Leather Established in 1872, Fritz Hansen has become synonymous with legendary Danish design. Combining timeless craftsmanship with an emphasis on sustainability, the brand’s re-editions of iconic pieces from such Danish Modern greats as Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner, and Vico Magistretti pay homage to the originals while thoughtfully incorporating innovation and responsibly sourced materials. The PK24™ chaise longue chair stands out as perhaps the most recognisable chair in Fritz Hansen’s Poul Kjærholm’s collection. Inspired by the Rococo period and the French chaise longue, Kjærholm used steel to support a curvy, flowing form. He labelled it the ’Hammock Chair’ to stress that it functions by suspending the body between two points. Price per item. Available in unlimited quantities. Choice of wicker chair with leather headrest, or fully leather-upholstered chair. Unique Chairs, Sofas and Other Seating for Sale on 1stDibs

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.
