About the Item

A late Georgian ducal armchair, circa 1840, retaining its original beech show-frame and covered in calico in preparation for reupholstery, so named for its generous proportions associated with the aristocracy in that period, distinguished by its tall, supportive back with comfortable lumbar-back support, well-shaped arms, and a deep, rounded seat, an early expression of the comfort-focused designs that would later be formalised by English makers such as Howard Sons. The chair stands on its original front cabriole legs, ebonised and worn in accordance with age, and straight tapered back legs, all terminating in original period brass castors. Traditional 19th-century upholstery foundations remain in place, including hand-tied webbing and natural fibre fillings. A good, honest example of an upholstered chair with Regency appeal, decorative potential and a pleasing stance.
