An exceptional early 19th century Italian armchair, newly reupholstered to dramatic effect while preserving its soulful, timeworn character. The generously proportioned frame is richly hand-carved throughout, with flowing scroll arms, boldly modeled legs, and an exuberantly carved apron, all retaining a beautifully worn, original painted finish that reveals layers of age and patina developed over more than two centuries.
The chair has been expertly recovered in a striking combination of materials. The seat is upholstered in deep black velvet, offering a refined, tactile contrast to the expressive carving, while the back is clad in natural zebra hide, carefully centered to showcase the graphic striping and finished with a subtle tail detail that adds sculptural interest and authenticity.
