About the Item

The Womb Chair stands as one of the most celebrated icons of 20th-century design, born from the collaboration between Eero Saarinen, Charles Eames, and Florence Knoll. Conceived in 1940 at Florence Knoll’s request for “a chair that felt like a basket full of pillows,” it was later produced by Knoll in 1948, marking a decisive step in the evolution of modern furniture. This first-edition example has been fully restored and reupholstered in a luxurious mottled red and white wool fabric by Maison Lelièvre. Its sculptural shell, crafted from reinforced resin padded with foam and resting on a polished tubular steel base, combines structural innovation with warmth and comfort. The Womb Chair remains an enduring expression of Saarinen’s belief that modern design should embrace both form and humanity. Manufacturer: Knoll, USA, 1948.
