About the Item

A pair of cream fabric wingback armchairs in the manner of Marco Zanuso, Italy, circa 1960. These elegant armchairs embody the refined organic modernism characteristic of postwar Italian design. Their sculptural winged silhouettes, gently curved arms, and tapered brass legs recall the work of Marco Zanuso, whose designs for Arflex and other leading manufacturers defined the aesthetic of the Italian modern movement. The high, enveloping backs and generous proportions combine comfort with architectural grace, making them both functional and visually striking. Zanuso (1916–2001) was one of the foremost figures in 20th-century Italian design, known for his pioneering use of new materials such as foam rubber and elastic webbing to achieve forms previously impossible in furniture making. His work bridged rationalist rigor with expressive softness, influencing an entire generation of designers and helping establish Italy as a global centre for modern design innovation. CONDITION The chairs were professionally reupholstered, likely in the 1980s. They show minor signs of wear and slight darkening to the white fabric, consistent with age, but nothing significant. The black fabric panel on the underside of one of the chairs has been removed.
