About the Item
A rare set of four super-stylish black 1980s ‘Cesca S64' armchairs in good vintage condition. Designed by Bauhaus giant Marcel Breuer, this 1987 date-stamped set of four armchairs are dripping with 1980s-cool and were made in Italy, likely by Gavina for Knoll. Sleek, smart, durable and versatile, these extremely comfortable armchairs make great dining or occasional chairs and will add stylish functionality wherever and however they’re used. We can also sell as a pair – please get in touch for a price.
The Cesca S64 chair was designed by Breuer in 1928 and is part of the MOMA collection and is widely regarded as one of the top 10 most important chairs of the 20th century. Fantastic ‘all-rounders’, these super armchairs are a favourite of design lovers worldwide and have more than stood the test of time thanks to their design simplicity, attractiveness, durability, functionality, quality, comfort and versatility.
This stylish set features black chrome-plated tubular steel frames with black lacquered beech wood arm rests and matching frames to the seat and back. Finished in rare and striking, very-1980s black and grey chevron-woven upholstery to the seat and both sides of the back, these are a standout set of armchairs, which won’t fail to add a sharp, smart, 1980-chic aesthetic to any setting. We can also sell as a pair – please get in touch for a price.
CONDITION
These are in good vintage condition. Structurally sound and extremely comfortable, they have to-be-expected signs of wear including minor, hard-to-notice marks to the upholstery and various marks, bumps, and historic touch-ups to the black lacquer on the arms, seat and back frames, which are more noticeable in certain lighting and have been taken into account in their pricing. They have the ‘87 MADE IN ITALY’ stamps to the underside of the seat frames and each chair has its four original foot clips, with some being looser than others. Overall they’re a rare, stylish, versatile and very comfortable set of armchairs in good vintage condition and if well looked after they should be just as impressive for generations to come – please see the photos.

By Francois A. Carre, John Woodard, John Salterini, Mario Papperzini, Herbert Saiger
Located in London, GB
A set of 4 gorgeous, impressive and rare Modernist iron strap vintage armchairs in wonderful, refinished condition. Likely made in the 1980s in continental Europe, these fabulously striking, assuredly robust and yet seductively sleek armchairs will add timeless sculptural elegance and bold sophistication to any outdoor setting.
Impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, these stately armchairs are made of iron and due to their wide iron-strap seats and superbly sweeping backs are – rather surprisingly – extremely comfortable, even without a cushion! The gracefully flowing lines and over-curving back and arms are particularly stunning, and the large seats and broad backs make them the ideal statement garden chairs.
Stylistically, the armchairs have an enhanced Post-Modernist 1980s assuredness to their more dainty design predecessors by Francoise Carré and Russell Woodard. Similar to Mario Papperzini for John Salterini and Herbert Saiger for Woodard’s more muscular 1970s iron strap chair...
