About the Item
of California, c. 1951. The molded plywood and sculpted foam design was influenced by Saarinen's Womb Chair, but anticipated the curvilinear, segmented designs of Pierre Paulin by about a decade. Despite being a Good Design selection, and being shown in every prestigious design publication in the US and Europe, fewer than 60 of these chairs were produced. Lustig was a visionary polymath best known for his graphic design, but adept also at architecture and interior design, as well as furniture and lighting design. Had he not died young (age 40) in1955, he might well be a household name now, like Eames or Girard.
