A wainscot chair is a type of chair which was common in early 17th-18th century England and colonial America, the name derives from the fine grade of oak which was used at the time for wainscot panelling. This type of armchair acted as a throne, supporting the status of an important individual, such as the Lord of the manor, the chairman or another type of dignitoary. Most people sat on stools or benches at this time, the carved crest frames the head like a crown, and the placement of the hands on the armrests gives the sitter a pose of status
formal power.

A good early original piece, hand carved, very naïve by today's standards but at the time this would have been considered very ornate.
Condition wise for the period is sublime, this chair is so tactile, and the patina is to die for, think how many hundreds and maybe thousands of people have used this chair, how many centuries of love and use it took to get looking like this. It is the best part of 380+ years old from new
