About the Item

Germany, late 19th to early 20th century In the manner of the Dresden or Munich workshops producing Rococo revival furnishings Dimensions: 35.25″ H × 24.5″ W × 20″ D A finely carved German Rococo armchair, late 19th to early 20th century, featuring an elegantly shaped backrest with scrolled crest surmounted by a carved shell and floral motif. The open splat is pierced and detailed with foliate carving, all in a gray-painted and parcel-gilt finish with soft patina and gentle distress consistent with age. The cabriole legs and shaped apron enhance the sculptural Rococo silhouette. Upholstered in a pale champagne damask woven with gilt floral and geometric patterns, trimmed with gold cord. The textile choice and restrained palette reflect the decorative taste of Iris Apfel, whose interiors often juxtaposed ornate European craftsmanship with refined contemporary color sensibilities. This chair likely originates from a Dresden or Munich atelier, active during the Rococo revival of the late 19th century, when German cabinetmakers reinterpreted French Louis XV forms with regional carving and paint techniques. Provenance: The Iris Apfel Collection Condition: Good overall condition. Minor paint loss, surface distress, and gilt wear consistent with age. Structurally sound and displays beautifully. About Iris Apfel: Iris Apfel (1921–2024) was an American design icon whose legendary eye for detail, history, and eccentricity made her one of the most recognizable figures in fashion and interior design. Together with her husband Carl, she founded Old World Weavers, providing fabrics for historic homes and the White House. Her personal furniture collection—layered with whimsy, European craft, and history—embodies her signature motto: “More is more and less is a bore.”
