About the Item

Armchair crafted from solid mahogany and upholstered in deep-buttoned Niger leather. The edges are accentuated with elegant brass nailheads — a refined decorative detail that underscores the chair’s artisanal quality. Produced in the 1940s by the celebrated Danish cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær. Palle Suenson, one of Denmark’s prominent modernist architects, often designed custom furniture for the interiors of his architectural projects. His furniture designs share a strong kinship with the work of Kaare Klint, considered the father of Danish modern design, with a similar emphasis on proportion, craftsmanship, and function. Inspired by classical ideals, the form of the chair is pared down to its essence — a pure expression of material and technique. Nothing is superfluous; everything is purposeful. The sharply bent armrests, a hallmark of Suenson’s aesthetic, give the chair its sculptural silhouette and architectural character. This armchair is a superb example of mid-century Danish design: functional yet elegant, precise yet warm — and a testament to the golden age of Danish cabinetmaking.
