About the Item

Arts Crafts Armchair in Elm, Attributed to William Birch for Liberty Co., circa 1900 An exceptionally characterful Arts Crafts armchair in richly patinated elm, attributed to William Birch of High Wycombe and likely retailed by Liberty Co., circa 1900. This fine example features a gently waisted ladder-back with three sinuously carved horizontal splats, flanked by turned finials and tapering uprights that terminate in finely turned feet. The open arms are supported by elegant spindles with a subtle baluster profile, echoed in the decorative lower stretchers. The rush seat, possibly original or an early replacement, is well-preserved, showing only minor wear in keeping with age. A chair that captures the transition between vernacular tradition and the ideals of the Arts Crafts movement — utilitarian yet lyrical, with a striking sense of verticality and rhythm in its construction. Comparable examples can be found in the Liberty catalogues of the early 20th century, with Birch’s distinctive High Wycombe craftsmanship evident in the detailing and proportions.
