About the Item

Highback Chair designed by Chris Wegerif, made of an Oak structure with woven cane seating and back (The back has been restored at a later date). An Art and Crafts chair from around 1900 by Dutch designer Chris Wegerif (1859 - 1920). The model of this chair is based on the traditional chairs made on the Orkney Islands, North of Scotland. The Orcadian farmers built them for their crofts, and the early chairs are very low. In this way, the person sitting in the chair was lower to the ground to avoid the air from the peat fire that was common in Orkney houses. The high back in straw was created to protect them from the draft and give more comfort. Literature: Chris en Agathe Wegerif by Cor de Wit. Apeldoorn, Historisch Museum, 1995. A Similar Chair is illustrated. Condition: Excellent condition with restoration to the cane on the highback.
