Arts and Crafts Oak Studio Chair by Arthur Simpson of Kendal, circa 1910 A rare and expressive studio chair by Arthur Simpson of Kendal, one of the most accomplished makers of the British Arts and Crafts movement. Crafted in solid oak with a rich, medullary ray grain and inset panels of patinated leather, the chair balances simplicity with ornamental force. The silhouette is gently architectural: a high, tapering back, a bowed rear stretcher, and front legs that lift to meet the broad arms with a sculptural poise. Carved detailing to the crest rail and fine chamfering throughout speak to Simpson’s mastery of restrained decoration. The circular dished arm terminals—unusual and beautifully executed—add both whimsy and symmetry to the otherwise angular composition. A contemplative piece, more than merely functional; it reflects the movement’s devotion to honesty in materials, clarity of line, and reverence for the handmade. Quietly monumental. Arthur Simpson (1857–1922) trained as a woodcarver before founding The Handicrafts in Kendal in the 1880s. He collaborated closely with the architect C.F.A. Voysey, and his workshop became a cornerstone of the Arts and Crafts tradition in the north of England.
