About the Item

These six McGuire Balboa chairs, finished in the richly evocative dark tobacco, are quintessential icons of mid-century organic modern design. Crafted by John and Elinor McGuire in the 1950s, the Balboa chair elegantly merges Eastern bamboo forms with Western minimalist structure—resulting in a piece as sculptural as it is functional. The signature cube-patterned rattan backs speak to architectural restraint and fluid craftsmanship. The gently curved arms and generously proportioned seats are tightly wrapped with rawhide bindings—hand-lashed for both durability and artisanal detail. Their current lacquered tobacco patina reveals time’s graceful softening, while ensuring a tactile, earthy elegance. John and Elinor McGuire launched their San Francisco firm in 1951 with a radical vision: to elevate rattan, bamboo, and other natural materials from casual tropics-inspired furniture to refined, luxury-grade design. The Balboa line—named for San Diego’s historic Balboa Park—was one of their most celebrated collections. Its design language drew upon the Japanese grid and lattice traditions as well as the relaxed informality of the California coast, creating a fusion that felt both cosmopolitan and organic. In the Balboa chair, this influence manifests in the squared rattan backs that recall Japanese shoji screens, balanced by the flowing arcs of the arms and tactile warmth of natural bindings. Restored with care, all 6 chairs are in overall excellent condition. We made minor touch-ups to some imperfections on the frames. Cushions are pre-owned, but still look great, with no issues. Thomasville Embassy Asian Chinoiserie Dining Chairs
By Century Furniture, Thomasville, Raymond K. Sobota
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Set of six dining chairs by Thomasville, from the Embassy line, restored with integrity and style. Includes two arm-chairs and four side chairs. Design is distinctly Chinoiserie, with an Asian-inspired silhouette: the crown is pagoda-notched, the blade-like backs curve inward following the spine’s shape for ergonomic support. Frames are solid wood, original finish clean with only minor blemishes; seat cushions have been re-upholstered in a neutral blended fabric combining tones of gray, brown, black and white—modern yet complementary to the frame tones. Restoration has reinforced structural joints; the wood surfaces have been cleaned, polished, and detailed so the grain and contour shine. The overall presence is both elegant and bold—chairs that bring visual rhythm to a dining set, a media console, or curated furniture group. Only minor imperfections remain on frames. All chairs are sturdy. Suited for interiors that prize material authenticity, decorative nuance, and vintage pedigree. These chairs perform well around classic dining tables, or paired with wood, lacquer, or mirrored surfaces. Ideal for collectors and designers who value style lineage, tactile form, and pieces that carry both beauty and useability. Lovingly restored, set of six Nineteen-Laties Thomasville Embassy...
