About the Item

Designed in the 1950s by Jorge Zalszupin and produced by his São Paulo workshop L’Atelier, this rare Bergère lounge chair and ottoman embody the refined synthesis that defined Brazilian modern furniture at mid-century. Zalszupin—trained in Europe and deeply engaged with international modernism—reinterpreted Italian and Central European influences through Brazil’s material culture and artisanal expertise. The sculptural structure is executed in solid Brazilian rosewood, visible in the elegantly articulated arms and legs, which lend warmth and architectural clarity to the design. The chair’s generous proportions reflect Zalszupin’s pursuit of comfort as a modern value, while formal elements echo his celebrated Paulistana and 801 armchairs—though the Bergère distinguishes itself through a more enveloping, domestic silhouette. The set has been carefully restored and reupholstered in a sophisticated combination of cognac leather and warm greige mohair, referencing the original two-tone upholstery while elevating the tactile and visual richness of the piece. The structure has been reinforced, and the rosewood refinished to reveal its vibrant grain. Sourced from a private residence in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, this example stands as a rare and highly resolved work by one of Brazil’s most influential modern designers.
