About the Item

Available today, this Brazilian Modern "Paulistana" Armchair with Ottoman with wool upholstery designed by Jorge Zalszupin in 1959 is nothing less than spectacular! The "Paulistana lounge chair and ottoman were designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his own company L’Atelier in 1959. After traveling to Europe in the early sixties, Zalszupin learned how to use plywood, which was still a relatively new material for that time. The first design that came from this trip to europe was the Paulistana lounge chair (named after the citizens of Sao Paulo, known as “paulistanos”). The design consisted of moulded Brazilian rosewood (Jacaranda) outer shells, leather upholstery, and a chrome plated metal base. This particular chair was purchased from a private residence in Sao Paulo. The wood has been refinished, the chrome has been plated and the wool upholstery is smooth and super cozy. This iconic and emblematic chair is very comfortable and would elevate any interior with a touch of Brazilian mid-century sophistication. About the designer: Jorge Zalszupin was a Brazilian architect and furniture designer who was born in Poland in 1922. He moved to Brazil in the 1950s and quickly became known for his innovative furniture designs that blended elements of European modernism with Brazilian warmth and tropical materials. Finally, Zalszupin's influence on the Brazilian design community has helped to shape a unique design aesthetic that continues to inspire designers around the world. Zalszupin's work was characterized by clean lines, bold shapes, and a playful use of color, and he created many iconic pieces of furniture that are still popular today. In addition, his furniture is known for its high quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, which results in pieces that are both beautiful and durable. Zalszupin's furniture continues to be highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts around the world, and his influence can be seen in the work of many contemporary designers who continue to draw inspiration from his innovative and playful approach to modern design. Zalszupin passed away in 2020 at the age of 98.

Jorge Zalszupin s Presidential Lounge Chair, Brazilian Mid-Century Modern Design
By Jorge Zalszupin
Located in Sao Paulo, SP
The "Presidencial" lounge lounge armchair is a true icon of Brazilian modern design, created by the legendary Polish-Brazilian architect and designer Jorge Zalszupin in the 1960s. This rare and coveted piece showcases the fusion of two cultures, with its base made of tubular steel and black lacquered metal slats, topped with Brazilian Jacaranda Rosewood veneers in an unusual bentwood design. Zalszupin's innovative use of molded laminate wood allowed him to create the curves he desired, without the need for costly manual processes. This resulted in a beautifully unique armchair, part of a series composed of a sofa and armchair, that has become a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts of Brazilian modern design. The lounge armchair's backrest is composed of profiled hardwood veneer slats, giving the piece a light and organic structure that elegantly accommodates voluminous cushions. Its "U" form seat rests on chrome-plated steel legs with tubular feet, while the armchair's rosewood-reinforced slat back adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. The Presidencial lounge chair is in very good vintage condition and has received new upholsteries in suede. Its sleek and modern design makes it a perfect addition to any space, whether in a home or office setting. While the armchair can be displayed without its original cushions, it also comes with a custom cushion for added comfort and style. Overall, the Presidencial armchair...
