About the Item

Late 19th-century child's armchair or fauteuil from the Scottish Orkney Islands, also referred to as Orkney Chair. The Orkney chair features an oak frame supporting a demicircle back in the style of wingback chairs, handwoven with straw. The wooden base with straight and splayed legs is connected with stretchers and armrests with scrolled ends and is housing a removable rush seat. These chairs, for adults or children, were meant to protect the sitting person against the rough and cold winds of the North Sea. The chair is in good condition and has scratches from usage over time, some loss of a very old varnish and some remains of tape on the varnish. The frame is sturdy and the straw is in solid condition. Measures: Seat Height 13 x Seat Depth 14.5 inches.
