About the Item

Very rare and early Kaare Klint "Faaborg" armchair in Cuban mahogany, oak and cane. Made at Cabinetmakers Rud Rasmussen, Copenhagen in the 1930s. The chair is in original condition and retains the hand woven cane seat and back. Marked with manufacturers label underneath. This chair was specially designed for the Faaborg Museum on the Danish island of Funen. For this museum Kaare Klint designed a series of furniture, in collaboration with architect Carl Petersen. This chair was presented to the public at the opening of the museum in 1915. The tapered legs and curved back legs give this chair and elegant and refined expression. The armrests and back are combined into one large semi-circle. The back and seating are upholstered with woven French canework. Therefore a semi-transparant surface is created. Klint chosed the canework so that the user of the chair still had a clear view on the museum mosaic floor. The Faaborg chair is an iconic object and landmark in design history. With it's simplistic design and cohesion between form, function and materials, this chair is the first Danish Modern design classic. The model was later altered and given an upholstered seat - these examples are common and still produced today.
