About the Item

This rare and completely original armchair was designed by Hendrik Wouda and produced around 1917 by Pander Sons, in the early years of Wouda's employment. The piece carries the early metal Pander manufacturer’s tag, confirming its origin within the formative period of Wouda’s career. This design represents one of Wouda’s earliest chair models, preceding the later, more streamlined modernist variants that would come to define his mature work. In this early version, one clearly recognizes the influence of his years working under H.P. Berlage, as well as the broader Arts Crafts / Nieuwe Kunst movement in the Netherlands. The chair demonstrates a careful balance of craftsmanship and structural clarity: A sculptural arched backrest, vertical slats that emphasize rhythm and upright posture, squared legs and stretchers that lend a strong architectural presence. The broad, gently curved armrests show the honest, handcrafted ethos of the period Constructed in solid oak throughout, the chair has a removable drop-in seat, upholstered in leather. This is a historically significant example within Wouda’s oeuvre, illustrating the transition from the artisanal, Berlage-influenced idiom to the more functional, modernist language he later refined. Authentic early Wouda pieces marked by Pander are increasingly scarce, especially in such well-preserved condition. Very good original condition consistent with age and use. The oak displays a warm patina and well-preserved grain. Leather seat shows age-related wear; can be reupholstered in any desired fabric or leather upon request. A rare and characterful accent chair, ideal for adding an authentic touch of Dutch Art Deco to an interior or enriching a curated collection of early modern European design. Also very suitable as a desk chair.
