About the Item
An exceptionally well-crafted armchair - attributed to Anton Lucas (Leiden, Netherland) and dating from around 1925. The design is a refined expression of the Haagse School (The Hague School) movement, displaying the architectural clarity and clean geometry characteristic of Lucas’s work, as well as the broader Dutch Art Deco aesthetic of the period.
Beautifully crafted in solid oak, the chair is enriched with striking coromandel (Macassar ebony) details. The armrests are made of solid coromandel, their linear grain offering an elegant contrast to the warm oak frame. Additional coromandel stretchers run along the legs, accentuating the chair’s strong graphical composition.
Subtle shifts in form, precise joinery, and a disciplined sense of geometry give the chair a distinctly modern yet timeless presence. The silhouette is balanced and thoughtfully proportioned - echoing the architectural language that connected Haagse School designers to influences such as Frank Lloyd Wright.
The piece has been reupholstered in a premium textured fabric, complementing the original wood and giving it a fresh, refined appearance. It remains in very good condition and is ready for use.
A rare and characterful accent chair, ideal for adding an authentic touch of Dutch Art Deco to an interior or enriching a curated collection of early modern European design.
