About the Item
Egg / Pod Lounge Chair designed and produced by Mario Sabot, Italy, 1960s
Designed and produced in Italy during the 1960s by Mario Sabot, the Egg / Pod Lounge Chair is a rare and striking example of experimental Italian design applied to interior furnishings. Entirely crafted in fiberglass, this sculptural lounge chair reflects the bold spirit of space age era, blending vintage charm with a distinctly futuristic aesthetic. Its dynamic silhouette was directly inspired by the legendary Ferrari GT models of the 1960s: the characteristic cut-outs echo the car’s grille and wheel arches, translating automotive performance into a radical seating form. This Pod chair is the result of a deliberate and forward-thinking design research carried out by Mario Sabot throughout the 1960s and 1970s, a period in which Italian designers pushed the boundaries of materials, form, and function.
The seating has been fully restored and reupholstered in brown fabric, enhancing comfort while respecting the original aesthetic.
The fiberglass structure has been intentionally left in its original condition; as a result, it shows visible signs of use consistent with age, which contribute to the chair’s authenticity and historical character.
Adding to its cultural significance, two Pod chairs were famously selected for the iconic summer residence Palais Bulles, commissioned by fashion visionary Pierre Cardin—today recognized as one of the most important historic buildings under the protection of the French Ministry of Culture.
