About the Item
Originally designed for the Soviet Pavilion at the 1928 Pressa exhibition in Cologne, El Lizzitzky’s D62 was enormously prescient. Rooted in the Bauhaus and constructivist movements, this early club chair recalls the radical geometry of his typographic work. Soft leather upholstery is enclosed by a studded sheath that recalls the shell of a crustacean.
Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer and architect Lizzitzky (1890-1941) was a great believer in the artist’s role as an agent for change. Perhaps best known for his pioneering graphic design work, he taught briefly at Marc Chagall’s People’s Art School and produced significant works of propaganda, including the Bolshevik lithograph ‘Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge’. In 1921 he became Russian cultural ambassador to Weimar Germany, influencing important figures of the Bauhaus and De Stijl movements.
