About the Item

This exceptionally rare armchair was designed by Hans Asplund around 1955. Asplund designed the chair for the beauty salon at the Nordiska Kompaniet department store on Hamngatan in Stockholm. The chair was reportedly produced solely for the salon in a few examples, please see the last 2 images of the listing to view the chairs in their original interior. Adding to the historical importance of this particular chair on offer is the fact that it comes from the private collection of Hans Asplund himself. The design is marked by the beautiful, sculptural frame, which has been entirely executed in solid walnut wood. The curved lines of the armrests, the legs and the backrest give the design a refined and elegant appearance. The seat, backrest and armrest are upholstered in brown leather. The chair is in very good, restored condition. Provenance: Architect Hans Asplund (1921-1994). Thence by descent to his son, diplomat and UN ambassador Bo Asplund (1950-2024). Thence by descent to the previous owner. Literature: Ingegerd Henschen Stig Blomberg, "Svenskt Möbellexikon", Förlagshuset Norden AB 1961, pp. 162-163. Filippo Alison, "Erik Gunnar Asplund - Mobili e oggetti", Electa Publishing 1985, pp. 44, 45 illustrated and mentioned. Hans Asplund (1921-1994) was a Swedish architect and professor, the son of architect Gunnar Asplund. Today, he is probably best known for the civic centre in Eslöv and the extension of the department store Nordiska Kompaniet (1953-63) in Stockholm. Hans Asplund was also an author and debater, wrote the book "Farewell to Functionalism," and coined the term "New Brutalism."

Easy chair designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden 1955
By Hans Asplund
Located in Stockholm, SE
Easy chair designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden, 1955. Walnut and leather. This rare easy chair, designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet in 1955, exemplifies Swedish mid-century modern design. Custom-made for the beauty salon at NK’s flagship department store in Stockholm, only six chairs were made and never offered for retail sale. Asplund’s collaboration with NK often involved site-specific furniture, tailored to complement the interiors of the store or other commissioned spaces. This particular chair highlights Asplund’s focus on functionality and elegance, featuring the walnut frame with elegant, flowing curves that define its sophisticated design paired with cognac leather upholstery. Hans Asplund (1921–1994) was a prominent Swedish architect and designer, belonging to the renowned Asplund family of architects, which included his father, Gunnar Asplund, one of Sweden’s most celebrated architectural figures. Hans Asplund is best known for his contributions to Swedish modernism, blending functionality with elegance in both architecture and furniture design. Provenance Architect Hans Asplund (1921-1994). Thence by descent to his son, diplomat and UN ambassador Bo Asplund (1950-2024). Thence by descent to the present owner.
