The mid-20th century saw brilliant European designers working to create furniture that explored truly modern shapes and innovative techniques, while still maintaining the highest level of quality. Designers experimented with new materials and construction methods, resulting in a harmonious blend of organic shapes and understated elegance. This robust sculptural wing-back armchair is a prime example of the era’s emphasis on beauty and experimentation. Originally, wing-back chairs were designed to protect occupants from drafts and to offer privacy, but have since become synonymous with comfort and timeless style. The traditional wing-back design is reinterpreted in the mid-century fashion in this piece, moving from the classic rounded and closed structure to a more modern and squared silhouette. In Flemming Lassen’s words, this shape is “as warm and safe as a polar bear cub in the arms of its mother in the middle of the ice cap”. In the design of this armchair there is a profound focus on comfort and cosiness, that invokes a pleasant homelike feeling, this impression is reinforced by the chair’s sheer volume, its oversized body setting it apart from the average armchair. The chair has sculpted stained wood legs, spherical in the front, and lightly splayed and curved in the back. This is an interesting detail that primarily serves the chair’s structural stability, but it also provides additional visual interest. This chair’s main decorative element is the design itself, unique yet timeless.
